The Quantification Of Awesome

About a year ago, a friend of mine showed me a few graphs he’d made that very nerdily recounted the number of surf sessions he’d had over the course of a year by location.

Being the data nerd that i am i decided to embark on my own data logging expedition.  Over the course of 2011, i logged each session, location, and how good it was.

As far a rating surf i decided to keep it simple.  Skunked, fun, really fun and all time–four categories.  So, if you’re willing to buy into the rating system…check out the amazing charts below.

Rating system:

  • 100% – All time.  Epic. Firing. Rare.
  • 75% – Super fun.
  • 50% – Better than being at work.
  • 0% – Shitty.  Skunked.  Complete waste of time.

The chart below shows the number of sessions and the average rating by month.

The chart below show the number of session and the average rating by location.

Here’s a table of the data that summarizes what i’m figuring i’ve dumped into my gas tank.  A few assumptions (the gas mileage, and an average gas price).  Associated chart below.

Location # of Trips Distance MPG Av Gas Price Total Cost Cost/Trip
WP 14 260 18 3.60 $728.00 $52.00
LP 6 300 18 3.60 $360.00 $60.00
NB 9 310 18 3.60 $558.00 $62.00
Other 9 160 18 3.60 $288.00 $32.00
OR 2 400 18 3.60 $160.00 $80.00
Totals 40 2094.00

So, what does all this data mean? Answer: nothing.

Happy New Year.
