Review: Lost Atlas

Kai Neville’s latest film, Lost Atlas takes surf hipsterdom to a new level.  Sick surfing, arsty as fuck, and an amazing soundtrack of bands you’ve probably never heard of.

There’s plenty of perfect shaped indo barrels…but what really appealed to me was the level of technical shit these dudes are doing in junk surf.  Specially, a few of Jordy and Dane’s parts.  Makes me think i need look at things differently when the waves are a mess.

At 2:50 Craig Anderson does a crazy foam climb.  Dude looks like he was levitating.  At 5:50 Jordy pulls into some foam barrel shore pound and manages to get out.  Impressive for a big dude.  I find myself saying “what?!” each time i see that one.  9:30 Chippa Wilson does this sick shove-it body varial.  12:35 Owen Wright does some super styley backside 5 mute grab (that’s what it’d be in snowboardering u-jump).  At 15:something Wade G pulls some sick superman shove-it things.  Styley.  Rad shit non-stop through the end.

And the soundtrack….  The soundtrack is SO good.  Kai provides a bunch of new bands to explore if you’re into music–especially if you read Pitchfork/listen to KEXP (hipster).  Super stoked on that…

Also of note, I counted 5 different hats on Dion Agius throughout the film.

Here’s a track listing of what’s in the movie:

- It's Choade My Dear - Connan Mockasin
- Hatchet - Rusted Shut - Rehab
- Devils Hearts Grown Gold - La Sera - Hardly Art
- Pacenite (Bolivia) - Alberto Ruiz Y Su Lira Incaica
- This Big World - Dead Gaze/Cole Furlow
- Sun Medallion - King Tuff
- 82nd And Heartache - Fear Street Super Chillers
- Where You From - The Samps
- Forever Dolphin Love - Connan Mockasin
- Sunday Evening - Echo Lake
- Gambang - Grimes
- Who's Got The Electricity - The Drags
- To Love Somebody - Bananas Symphony
- It's Twinkle - Hotel Mexico
- #5 - Washed Out ??
- Sweet 17 - Dirty Beaches
- Round The Moon - Summer Camp
- Video Store Rental Guy - Total Slacker
- Thought Ballune - Unknown Mortal Orchestra
- In Power We Entrust The Love Advocated - Dead Can Dance
- The Love Between - White Fence

The last scene with John Florence, Dusty, and Chippa Wilson is amazing.  A rad Dead Can Dance song that fits perfectly with the surfing and the background landscape.  All slow-mo and moody n shit.

All in all, Lost Atlas looks good and sounds good and gets me hyped to surf.  In the end…that’s all you can hope from a surf flick.
