Review: Capita Black Snowboard Of Death

This year i bought a Capita Black Snowboard of Death (BSOD) 165cm.  The BSOD is Capita’s longest running board–10 years.  The board is a stiff all-mountain freestyle board–aka does everything.

I’ve been on this board for a full season now, and in pretty much every conditions the Northwest can throw at you.  Feels more solid underfoot than any board i can remember–doesn’t give a fuck what you ride through.  It’s all handled.

The Board

Camber - Board has slight normal camber between the feet, and then slight reverse outside the feet.

Width - If you’re running size 10 to 12s the BSOD is a prefect, slightly wider but not too wide board–aka mid-wide–aka 26.0ish waist.

Stiffness - Capita says this is a 7 out of 10 on the stiffometer.  I agree.

Graphics -  Black with skulls and leg bones and weird space nebula shit.  Clean, simple and subtle.

The Riding

The thing i like most about this board is it’s versatility.  The reverse camber in the tip and tail helps with float just enough.  The camber between the feet keeps the board in control.  Nothing lamer than a board that kills pow only to kill you when you pop out of the backcountry onto a groomer.

Pow - This board destroys pow*.  I’ve managed to get this board out on quite a few pow days this year (thx Ma nature). When I see some untracked pow I pretty much just want to beat the shit out of it.  The BSOD agrees.  It’s like we’re a team.

Park - Haven’t ridden much park this year.  Just Pow.

Pipe - No pipes in WA.  But i’m confident this board would be amazing in the pipe if we fricken had one (i’m talking to you Stevens/Snoqualmie Pass)!

Carrrrrving - So fun. I’ve started to really enjoy laying down sweet carves. Get this BSOD on some clean groomers and it might as well be pow. Get low, drag a hand, it rails. Really fun. The board has a little nipple of reverse edge traction right between the feet that is designed to help hold an edge or something.  Super turny, quick edge to edge, accelerates out of turns.

Rails - Hell if i know.

Shred Notes:

1. The other day at Crystal, took a few runs down Kelly’s gap. For those that haven’t ridden there, Kelly’s gap is a long ass cattrack (1.8 miles) that snakes it’s way from about mid mountain to the base area. It’s wall hit madness. Left side, right side–It’s also the “easiest way down” so on busy days it’s a shit show.  At speed the run becomes a lesson in edge control.  You can also chuck snow off the edge of the cattrack to the switchback below and blast people.  So fun.

2. I rode the BSOD in the Banked Slalom this year.  The board felt more solid for me than any of the previous Banked Slalom attempts.  I even ended up getting a better time than Terje–but he was riding switch.  :|

3. The first day out on this thing I blasted a rock–core shot right on the edge. Collected 2 more pretty bad ones over the course of next two months.  Held up fine unrepaired, exposed core.  Took it to SnoCon Nick and got er fixed up all brand new.  Well made boards.

4.  While riding on a flat groomer the other day i decided to see if i could spring off the tail and get some air time.  To my surprise i was able to get way more air than expected so i threw in a grab.  A nearby hot mom noticed.  Lotta pop in the BSOD.

Final Thoughts

If you look at natural terrain as a snowboard park more than an actual snowboard park looks like a snowboard park than this board is for you.  If you ride nothing but snowboard parks than this board is probably for you.  If you are from the O and like nothing more than to rip up fresh corduroy then this board is for you.  If you want to saw a board in half and get all split crazy then this board is for you.

I’m stoked on this board–it was well worth the money.  I’ll probably be riding it next year.
