Forgot how fun Westport can be. Haven’t been there in a while (which is nice). Good waves, and minimal hassles. Waist to chest on Sat, sun, clean and not too cold. Sunday was same but tiny.
On Saturday i was out at the corner with about 100 other dudes when i noticed an object floating out in the rip. After catching a wave i paddled back out via the rip and saw that it was a piece of a rental board. I grabbed it and tossed it up onto the jetty, figuring i’d get some wave karma or something.
Earlier i’d noticed a guy who seemed really out of place. I figured he could figure it out on his own. Maybe not.
There was also more dudes on SUP’s than ive ever seen in my life. A whole fleet of em. Must be popular. From the water it looked like the SUP dudes were being swept more than they were sweeping–they were at least a mile down the beach when i got out. Here’s webcam evidence.

i try to not be bothered by stand-up. in hawaii a good chunk of the SUP’s are local guys who’ve surfed their whole life. i usually find most to be courteous and extremely respectful – constantly giving a short boarder like myself waves when it’s me v.s. them. the SUP’s that i’m usually frustrated with are the newbies and the occassional bad seeds – no worse than a longboarder gone bad or anyone else making your session difficult. but that said, my attitude is a little different with what is going on other places. it makes my skin crawl to think of all the SUP people that have never surfed before, who are learning on lake washington and the sound and everywhere else, paddling those tanks out into local line-ups. scary.

I’ve had some altercations SUP’s in the past and really can’t stand them, but did notice that they were smart enough to stay down the beach and out of the way. Maybe they’re finally learning some surf etiquette. I still wouldn’t hesitate to drop in on `em if they sit way outside and take 2 set waves in a row.
i guess you just have to assume everyone has some level of common sense. when they don’t that’s when some people feel the need to offer some suggestion–aka never surfed before and taking a SUP out in the line up. f that.
sunday was tiny. there was a few guys out but they were waay down beach. i probably would’a been a bit stressed if there was some actual swell and there were SUP’s outside manned by dudes who keep falling off. never really had a problem with a SUP like i’ve heard of happening.
maybe we’re lucky up here where 90% of the SUP people can’t actually surf. otherwise they’d be gobbling up waves. the NW is such an outdoor recreation focused place that it doesn’t surprise me that SUP sales have gone through the roof. altercations will happen im sure.

SUPers in washington are quite a mixed bag. Some stink and others can surf.

weird that any of you would talk shit about how anyone rides waves when none of you can surf. WA easily has the biggest kooks on the west coast! why no pics of your crews actually riding waves…oh wait, you can’t even do a turn but want to pretend you work for Surfer Mag or something. one day Drex you’ll be reconized has the WA sellout in the lineup. you should show us your face if you want to post our waves.

i love how since it’s easy, and anonymous, all the hate gets funneled through this site. if you really have a problem you ought to poke around on the net a little. there’s huge sites out there with some stuff that will prob really piss you off–directions, names, gps, obvious photos, lady gaga, etc. you might want to focus some of your anger at those sites. for example, the video in this LINK will probably make your head explode: LINK
