A friend of mine got the idea a while back to do a Surf/Poker/Chili Cook-Off Contest. Where/how he got the idea i have no idea but it turned out to be pretty damn fun. About 20 people showed up for the 1st annual Hot & Spicy, Chips & Chili, Surf n’ Slash Bash. Nic came up with a logo, Kop-a-feel made some trophies, a date was set and Blamo–it was on.
The plan was to surf Saturday day, do the chili cook-off in the evening, and after that have the poker tournament. Most of us showed up Saturday morn to heavy rain after a 4 hour drive and a 5:45am ferry departure.
Everyone hit the water that morning during mini squall but the waves ended up being pretty damn good. Waist high, clean, peeling good and warm water (no gloves). The water had a weird yellow tinge to it and smelled like dirt. It was pretty cool–water was so murky, you couldn’t see your board under about 1 foot of water. After about a couple hours of moderate rain the clouds parted, sun came out and wind shifted to offshore. Super fun session–way more fun that i was expecting.
Next up in the HSCCSSB was the chili-cook off. The plan here was to submit your chili and a panel of 5 independent judges would taste each and rate them. There were 6 different chilies submitted and probably 4 gallons total of chili which surprisingly all got eaten. There was meat chili, veggie chili, there was a recipe with some PBR in it. Otter/Czamara made some chili with a shit ton of various pepper that when they ended up cooking created a mace cloud that made everyone in the place start choking and coughing. That was pretty rad. But Kop-a-feel ended up winning the chili cook-off with some crazy, coffee/brown sugar chili concoction that was actually really good.
The poker tournament capped off the action Saturday night. We had 11 people enter with a 20 dollar buy in. Two separate tables with the last six combining into a single table. I lasted maybe 20 mins. The full game lasted a few hours with a split descision between Becker/Kelley. The both walked with a little over $100 each. Weekend paid for.
I got up around 8am Sunday morn and checked the surf. Low tide and everywhere looked like ass–small, junk, bumpy, crap, ick. I contemplated bouncing early. Decided to wait around for the tide to come up and low and behold it turned the fuck on. Paddled out at mid-tide through one of the most savage insides ever. After about 20 minutes and 80 duck-dives, i was outside. Waves were yellow, glassy, solid shoulder, warm water and sunny! A few 10 ft sets were rolling through also. Waves were peeling well, super fun drops, long rides with minimal sections. When i got out there i was surprised at how fun it was cause from the shore it didn’t look nearly as good.
Awesome weekend and the surfed turned out to be 100 times better than we expected.

You forgot to mention one of the most entertaining contests of the weekend- Zombie like beer crawl/hunt that took place during the wee hours of the AM when the camp finally ran out of alcohol. I’d be surprised if there was even rubbing alcohol left in the cabins.

Have fun and bring a gun. Should be solid there too.
I never leave the PNW in October. Granted this one hasn’t been as stellar as years past, so far. But this is the shit I wait for. Usually hit up the islands in Feb when the cold has taken its toll and the locs are semi surfed out if it’s a good year.
yeah, lookin good here this weekend, i’m sure hawaii won’t be bad either.
I like the guys comment, “On the brightside, at least the shark had the courtesy to bite a haole.” ha ha……’be careful out there drex’
Anyone make it down to check out Nelscott? Heard it was tight.
I guess Gerry Lopez was in Pacific City today too surfing.
Nelscott…I was there on my alaia. Then headed over to PC to with my SUP to catch up with Gerry. Fun day.
Nah, some reason watching big wave surfing keeps me entertained for about 5 minutes at tops. I doubt I could ever put that stuff off, but still doesn’t make it exciting to watch.
Gerry is dead to me. MF’er make that SUP shit look sooo easy that he’s even inspired neighbor to take up the sport. My neighbor- the guy who’s asked me a few years ago where my sail was for my ‘wind surfer’.

Gerry was SUPing in PC? Was he at Gas Chambers?
Could never imagine SUPing that on a big day.
I had a few neighbors get into SUPing recently too. Trying to get me to take them to the beach. I’ll go around here, but man do I hate those things in the line up.
GL is a true master, lord, yogi, and yes… a muther f’ng SUP’er! first hand spectator-kook’d him in mex and pc on serious overhead swell… he charges on that 9’6-someting quad fin fish sup thang… amazing presence in the water, ‘nough said
Gas Chambers cant really hold anything over 7 or 8 foot max, so doubt anyone was surfing it the day of Nelscott.
Gerry is no doubt the head janitor at PC (aka the Epicenter) the only place him and the rest of Bend seem to surf. I dont surf there that often, but when I do, he’s usually out SUP’ing it up. 4 plus years ago was the last time I saw him on one of his SB shapes.
But the real news is Kalani Boy Rob and a few other pro ho’s showing up a few weekends back and tearing it up. Didnt see it 1st hand, but it happened. We dont call it the Epicenter for nothing.
Oh yeah and 110 a night for one of those cabins. What an fuking rip. Those injuns have a friken monopoly out there.
