Surf/Poker/Chili Cook-Off Contest

A friend of mine got the idea a while back to do a Surf/Poker/Chili Cook-Off Contest.   Where/how he got the idea i have no idea but it turned out to be pretty damn fun.  About 20 people showed up for the 1st annual Hot & Spicy, Chips & Chili, Surf n’ Slash Bash.  Nic came up with a logo, Kop-a-feel made some trophies, a date was set and Blamo–it was on.

The plan was to surf Saturday day, do the chili cook-off in the evening, and after that have the poker tournament.  Most of us showed up Saturday morn to heavy rain after a 4 hour drive and a 5:45am ferry departure.

Everyone hit the water that morning during mini squall but the waves ended up being pretty damn good.  Waist high, clean, peeling good and warm water (no gloves).  The water had a weird yellow tinge to it and smelled like dirt. It was pretty cool–water was so murky, you couldn’t see your board under about 1 foot of water.  After about a couple hours of moderate rain the clouds parted, sun came out and wind shifted to offshore.  Super fun session–way more fun that i was expecting.

Next up in the HSCCSSB was the chili-cook off.  The plan here was to submit your chili and a panel of 5 independent judges would taste each and rate them.  There were 6 different chilies submitted and probably 4 gallons total of chili which surprisingly all got eaten.  There was meat chili, veggie chili, there was a recipe with some PBR in it.  Otter/Czamara made some chili with a shit ton of various pepper that when they ended up cooking created a mace cloud that  made everyone in the place start choking and coughing.  That was pretty rad.  But Kop-a-feel ended up winning the chili cook-off with some crazy, coffee/brown sugar chili concoction that was actually really good.

I got up around 8am Sunday morn and checked the surf.  Low tide and everywhere looked like ass–small, junk, bumpy, crap, ick.  I contemplated bouncing early.  Decided to wait around for the tide to come up and low and behold it turned the fuck on.  Paddled out at mid-tide through one of the most savage insides ever.  After about 20 minutes and 80 duck-dives, i was outside.  Waves were yellow, glassy, solid shoulder, warm water and sunny!  A few 10 ft sets were rolling through also.  Waves were peeling well, super fun drops, long rides with minimal sections.  When i got out there i was surprised at how fun it was cause from the shore it didn’t look nearly as good.

Awesome weekend and the surfed turned out to be 100 times better than we expected.
