Getting Some Costa Rica Pt 2

Wow…we showed up to Withces Rock Surf Camp at 2pm on Sat…checked the schedule board and we were booked for a 3:30 boat trip to Playa Grande. No messing around here. The boat was anchored what seemed like 1/2 mile out from the Tamarindo break…probably more like 1/4 mile. But damn it was a long paddle! Seemed like a bit of a test to see if we could get our paddle on. We cruised north from Tamarindo a couple miles maybe to Playa Grande. We ended up surfing a spot on the north side of the main break called Snakes. Our “guide” threw everyones boards into the water…pointed to the pumping swell and said lets go! We all paddled out and sized up where we needed to be to catch on of these bombs. I waited and watched a few heavy sets roll thru. Then went for broke…took a super steep drop and caught a sweet head high right…zipped down the line! First wave in Costa a macking right…stoked! But know I was way inside and cut my toe on a rock. The paddle back out was ruthless but totally worth it.

Sunday we took a shuttle van to Marbella Bay. The swell was big and tons of current. Super hard to get out. The guide an Aussie dude were the only ones that got out. Rad spot though…tons of potential with a little more manageable surf. We loaded up and headed to Avellanas. The parking area was packed. Every local in the area was there and it was going off. The waves were overhead with a crazy current ripping down the beach. Our guide said it was one of the bigger swells he had seen there all year. The locales were dominating. There was a sweet bar that I watched it go down with a beer in hand and got some sick HD vid on the new cam. Ill try to upload when I have more time.

Costa Rica is pretty sweet super clean, friendly laid back vibe and sweet breaks. Rad first couple days. Im off to go surf the Tamarindo rivermouth…
