If you are broke, Sharks will not attack you.

Well, not exactly.  But a team of researchers in Florida have argued that the current recession has resulted in fewer shark attacks.  The found a similar trend after the 9eleven attacks, when fewer Americans went on vacation due to recession.

“I can’t help but think that contributing to that reduction may have been the reticence of some people to take holidays and go to the beach for economic reasons,” said George Burgess, who directs the International Shark Attack File at the university.

“We noticed similar declines during the recession that followed the events of 2001, despite the fact that human populations continued to rise,” he said in a reference to the September 11 attacks.

The article then goes on to state that beach time for surfers is probably not affected by recession as much as beach time for a typical vacationer. But the way i see it, if you get layed off due to the recession, you’ll have more free time, so you’d be surfing more.  Therefor, it stands to reason that if you are in fact “broke”, you have a higher chance of being shark-attacked.

Be careful out there.
