Mt. Baker Thursday

Well, it started at 4:30 in the morning, left Ballard at five in the morning.  Probably an inch on the ground and snowing hard.  Signs are good, Curt Ass came in loaded with egg sandwich’s and coffee.  Roads pretty good, a little bumpy ice style through Mt Vernon, a pretty solid 60 the whole way. Ten inches of new overnight and 17 in the last 24 hours. Got there after 8:30.  Snow was light (of course), about 14 degrees and pretty good coverage.  First run down the face of the chair that used to have two chairs side by side (drex add in number – Chair 5!).  Very light and very deep in spots, up to my waist.  Hitting a lot of shrubbery and snow not sticking well to anything that resembles a shoot.  Definitely some good turns though.  Then on the way up the chair (same one- Chair 5!) we see a lot of commotion going on, people un-strapping and trying get to a guy that is upside down at the bottom of a cliff with only about 6 inches of his boots showing (still strapped in) and not moving at all.  Everyone was trying to get to him but balls deep snow it is very slow.  Crazy to just watch from a chair.  Very helpless feeling.  People that saw him from the chair were getting to him faster than people on the ground.  No redcoats yet.  Lots of people heading down there, so we figured more would get in the way?  Went up the chair again and they had him out.  Which was very good to see.  Kinda didn’t think it was going to end well.  He was sitting up with all the trolls and looking really dazed, lots of pats on the back.  So that pretty much was a wake up call on the day and probably for that kid going for it on his first run of season.  Hard start.  Just toured the mountain for the rest of the day, nothing major, no crazy hiking, front side was closed, and powder was getting eaten up quick.  Another thing, to all of you who wanted to buy one of those new fancy 6 hundred dollar banana carvers and couldn’t justify it like me.  Camber still works really well.  I hit the hill with 2007 technology, no magna traction, no rocker, and laid it down.  No probs.

Also, with not going over 60 mph the whole trip, gas mileage was insane.  34 to the g, whoop whoop!  Jimmy Carter was right!!!!  He no dummy.
