Reluctantly i decided to surf Westport this weekend. The pro/con balance of the place usually gets me surfing elsewhere but myself and a couple friends decided to giver a go this weekend.
We were hoping to get to the coast in time for an evening session. But getting out of Seattle on a Friday afternoon is challenging. You pretty much gotta leave before noon if you expect to miss traffic. Traffic was chill when we left Seattle around 7pm. No evening session though.
We woke up to crows attacking our camp at about 5am. Perfect alarm clock. Checked the spots: Groins was a mess of swell, heavy current and wind. Cove was blown out and small. The Jetty was a shiz-bucket of huge waves, tight interval and onshore wind. Back to sleep.
We got up a few hours later, checked spots again. Same thing. High tide was at 5pm so we decided to head back into Aberdeen to brave Wal-Mart to kill some time. Wal-Mart is an amazing place. It’s like a circus with ella cheap shiz that you didn’t even know you needed. A huge beach towel for $7 bucks? Sure! A tarp for my tent for $4? Totally! Airsoft Guns for $14 bucks?! Booya! But really Wal-Mart is like a Gummo/Twilight Zone combo punch. I left that place dazed.
Got back to the Pit and decided to hop in at the Groins. Tide was in a coupla hours and we figured it would pick up. The exact opposite happened and we were left floating, waiting and getting cold. Abort. Packed in the car and headed over to the Jetty. Jetty was still pretty messy though a bit cleaner than earlier. F it. We paddled out.
Once we got out to the line up we were pleasantly surprised. Waves though big and gnarly/bumpy were actually forming pretty good. We expected to get beat up and maybe come belly surfing right back to shore but it turned out to be one of the better sessions i’ve ever had at Westport. The swell was big enough that the wind wasn’t much of a factor. The sun was intermittently poking through, water was warm–and the best part was no one was out. Hardstab and i pretty much had that place to ourselves for the ~3 hours we were out which is rare for a Saturday. We both got a bunch of fun, long rides. Stoked.
I don’t know if it was the weather forecast or the swell but nobody came out. The parking lot had maybe 15 vehicles in it which is usually maxed out on summer weekends.
What began as a lame weekend (traffic, no waves, gummo/twilight zone Wal-mart) panned out to be really fun.

Nice, no crowds is a hit. THe weather could have done it. It was raining in Seattle.. all fking day. Snowball figured out how to make things explode when you shoot them, which was a highlight.

Nice work gettin’ uncrowded Westport in June. I’m guessing the wind forecast and crappy weather forecast helped you guys out. You guys are troopers. Also….nice work blowing things up snowbomber, impressive fireball. On another note, anybody check the Alpental webcam lately, looks like f-in January. Wtf.
Yeah. Super fun day. One of those days were you keep saying to your self ‘no-way!’ after each wave.
Nice work on the explosion. I think we got a new nickname for ya: flameball.
