Snowboards have not changed too much in the last 10 years. So I’m curious to what people are riding in the northwest these Days.
2005 160 Lib Mullet (black base/no Magna) no need. This board is the best powder board ever hands down. Floats through the cream with no back leg burn. Some friends just ride this board all year. For me the board is a bit wide for jibbing and I have smaller feet.
2008 159 Lib TRS Banana Magna. This board came to me with more hype than I’ve heard in a long time. So my expectations were high. The board is fun I mainly rode it in the pow cause it wont stop snowing and it floats nice when its balls deep. It’s real loose and fishy for you surfers. The tail is too soft for high speed run outs. I wouldn’t do gunsight on this board. I think for spring riding this board would be real fun but if your riding pow and charging just get a mullet. I hear Mervin is integrating banana in more boards next year I hope they can make them stiffer.

t. rice lib tech. 157…….its a park board but it was fun in pow. Definitely more work than some of my past boards in the powder. So far i’m on my second board in about six trips to the mountain. At this rate, it could be a long, expensive year. I’m definitely not shouting praise for lib techs quite yet, but every time up i get a little more used to the way lib’s ride. I have a feeling its going to be really good in some icy pipe/park.

I have an Option Northshore. It’s pretty sic. The biggest difference i’ve noticed is in pow on a flatter slope. On a non tapered board you’d have to lean back like a mo-fo. This board is already in the backseat so your back leg doesn’t get so hammered.
But i like to jump, spin, wreck, takes stumps to the ass so i’d rather have an all mountain board with a tail. Im on the Option Franchise. Super sic board. Great all mountain: pow, drops, ujump, park. no rails though. the board is said to explode under your feet if it touches rails.
B…didn’t you know. Atomic snowboards come with an alpentalic sticker and a fanny pack. Snowman is all about it.
Pow – 07 K2 Legend 158 (for when it’s 2′ of fresh or under) and 07 Legend 164 for the Big Dump.
All mountain – either a 07 K2 Believer 161 (not to stoked on it yet…but only 6 days riding it – it’s kinda limp)…or a 06 Ride Prophet 159 (super slasher board)
Park/Jib – 2006 Ride DH 155 (cause it has meh fookin picture on it!). Bro Model!
Backyard Jib (no shit) – a 1990 something K2 Daniel Frank 140 something with the whales on the base. Hell yes.
Would like to give one of the new “rocker” or “banana” boards a shot. Check it out and see what the hype is all about. Magna nuthin. It’s as gimmicky as a wax filled base. Get strong legs. RAWK.
I have the newest mullet with magna but pulled a Rumsfeld and grinded that shit down hard so the magna doesn’t grab as much on cat tracks and pull your ass to the ground. I have been riding an Altered Genetics 155 non magna this year too. It is the shortest board i have ridden in powder and if it is not too deep this board rips.. perfect for those medium snow fall days.. but I am just some biker dude from FLA who really has no idea whats going on…
B you wouldn’t know Atomic made snow boards casue they are only at Alpy… Snowman and Dennis….all 2 of them.
I just picked up a Burton T6 haven’t ridden it yet but the thing looks like it rails. I’ll let you know

Signal OG 159 or bigger. Local company, local artist, and a bunch of the Baker locals ride them, so that should speak volumes. i just broke my Option Franchise. luckily i had a backup board to ride….brand new still in the plastic…a Ride Dose 162. it’s a mid-wide twin. thing is ef-ing sick. super poppy, stable in high speed chunder, plenty turny for a mid-wide and it has chainsaws and a shark playing the drums for graphics.
For whatever reason Ride isn’t super popular around here, but if you go anywhere else pretty much everyone is rocking them. Odd cause it’s a NW company.
Ride Dose 162 = 2 thumbs up.

i rode signal last year (at baker even) and thought it was sick. i was stoked on the company. but they didnt get the memo and 35th supposedly didnt order any this year. subsequently i didnt get one and had to get back on the burton bandwagon. un…inc. one five sicks. kills it. all over. blindfolded. pops and stomps. and holds up at high speeds. both ways. at first the sidecut was a noticeable difference from that signal 59 i was on last year. but as soon as i got used to having an edge the board became an extension of my legs.

Reverse shocker a technique I picked up during my undergraduate days go in with the left hand thumb, pointer, middle ( pink) ring pinky (stink). Typically its a 6 pack minimum required.

As far as the magna traction, it seems to make a difference in the hard pack/ice. Pretty fun to carve. Gotta try that banana though, before i believe all the hype. Drex…you need a new forum! What a killer thread! Minnesota versus Washington in terms of snowboarding. That is pretty damn funny. The most vertical drop of any mountain in Minnesota is apprx. 825ft. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lutsen_Mountains). The vertical drop at Alpental is apprx. 2,200ft (and that is only one of our great mountains to ride). MN just doesn’t have a leg to stand on.
Let’s run down a few MN hills for a second:
1. Afton Alps…you drive DOWN into a ravine to take the chair lift back up to the flat (which is the “summit”). NO SHIT!
2. Buck Hill – Basically Summit Central but with a mega fuckin’ rope tow that sucks and it’s bullet proof ice from Nov – Feb (what MN resort isn’t), but it has a pipe.
3. Trollhaugen – more rope tows, and the “ropes” to duck to go “freeriding” is actually farm fencing.
4. Spirit Mountain – probably the only cool thing to ride in MN, and it is still a tiny vertical drop of frozen break yo’ self tundra wasteland.
5. Bad Lands – the MN and WI area has such a lack of good parks or features to ride that a Farmer Father who’s son liked to snowboard, built him a snowboard park out of the small hill on his private farm land. It has since opened to the public (back in 98 or so) and it also is run by a mega fuckin’ rope tow and is still geeked.
Talent is in the individual not the area…so who gives a shit if Chad Otterstrom is from Trollhaugen and Jamie Lynn is from Summit. What we are talking about here is not individual talent (as the NW has spawned legions of better riders than the entire midwest) but yet we are talking about where it is better to ride. Do you see ANY northwest kids dreaming about moving to MN to shred? Hell NO! But damn near EVERY MN kid wants to move the fuck outta Mud Duck Land and get some real turns on natural (non man made) snow where the runs are longer than 90 seconds.
So…if this were a boxing match, the Summit just KO’d all of Minnesota in round 1.
MattV you sound like a really nice and reasonable guy. Since you made it into the Snowboard Industry then you at least have some good things in common with everyone on this thread. You just gotta keep your MN pride to yourself because it’s not gonna win over anyone here in the NW. I aint never hated on the NW scene, in fact the reason I moved out here was because of my friends from the area who have been nice enough to show me around and welcome me with open arms. I was giving you guys shit about Summit Central which is a pretty funny scene, and this is from someone who has been all over the globe snowboarding. It’s funny last year when we were filming at Central all the kids there were freaking out on the Minnesota cats due to their shred skills. I love the North West though, thats why I moved here, and I dare you to try and prove me wrong. The reason I poke fun with a smirk at Central is because you can go there on a powder day and still see kids with 26 inch stances riding park, if thats not good laugh I don’t know what is. On that note I’m friends with half the Summit crew and they invite me to their events to shoot photos and do the super post for snowboard-mag every time there is something going down. Last but not least you forgot Hyland Hills elevation three hundred feet, fastest rope toe in the land, and it churns out talent like it’s Finland. There something to be said about a ton of kids coming out of the Mid-West that are blowing peoples minds, I mean they have such shit hills as you broke down for us, but they somehow rise to the top the game year after year, weird. Most be something in the water, but what do I know I’m just a kook from Minnesota . Kelson we started a monster, laughs…
